The scare mongering by the medical community and the media has reduced our saturated fat consumption without denting the rate of heart disease or it’s precursor symptoms such as high blood pressure or obesity. All that has gone up is mild cognitive impairment, dementia and Alzheimer’s. This should give you something to think about.
This will be a series of articles to set the balance in favour of consuming the right fats and hopefully reducing the diseased states we find ourselves in, due in part to being scared of saturated fats.
Coconut Oil is the Swiss Army Knife of the Fat World
Go buy yourself some coconut oil today as it makes a health conscious individuals ideal cooking oil. Coconut oil may improve thyroid function, increases insulin sensitivity, improve lipid profile and kill pathogens
What About Fat Loss?
A 2009 Brazilian study recorded biometric measurements, BMI scores (body mass index) and lipid profiles of 40 women aged between 20-40 with waist measurements that were or above 88cm (34.5”).
The women were separated into two groups of 20, placed on low calorie diets with one group supplementing with 30ml of soy bean oil and the other group supplementing with coconut oil. After a 12 week period the results were telling:
Coconut oil group presented with:
– increased HDL’s (good cholesterol)
– lowered LDL’s (bad cholesterol)
– lower BMI score
– reduced waist circumference
Soy oil group presented with:
– an increase in total cholesterol
– lowered HDL’s (good cholesterol)
– increased LDL’s (bad cholesterol)
– no significant decrease in waist circumference
Overall the coconut oil helped improve lipid profile and lowered waist measurements. The soy oil group lipid profile became worse.
Take note this study is not implying coconut oil is a magic bullet approach to fat loss or health but simply affirming possible health and aesthetic benefits of a saturated fat when compared to the predominantly polyunsaturated soy oil.
I actually add coconut oil it to my coffee for all the health benefits and you actually get better sustained energy.
